Community Tree Care

kids planting treeFind useful information and advice for your tree care programs.  The regional resource created by the Southern Region of the USDA Forest Service contains sample tree ordinances, a training manual, news from around the South, and many more useful links.

Whether you live on the coast of Mississippi or just want a good example of a tree selection and maintenance brochure for homeowners to adapt for your own area, take a look at Homeowner’s Guide to Hurricane Resistant Landscapes.

Tree City USA is a national recognition program that provides a basis for a good community forestry program.  Cities must meet four program criteria as follows:

  • A tree ordinance
  • A tree advisory board
  • Spend $2 per capita on their community tree care program
  • Hold an Arbor Day celebration and proclamation

Applications must be submitted annually to maintain Tree City USA status.  Some of Mississippi’s most successful municipal programs used Tree City USA as a basis to start their program and continue to maintain their status.  Fore more information on this program visit the Tree City USA website.
