Public Outreach

The Mississippi Forestry Commission maintains an active Public Outreach program designed to heighten the public's awareness of the agency's mission, services, and the importance of the forest resources.  The Public Outreach program utilizes mass media outlets (e.g., radio, television, and newspaper) to broadcast public service announcements and general forestry information to the public at large.  Public outreach activities are carried out locally to reach individuals at the community level.

Mississippi Project Learning Tree (PLT)

The Mississippi Forestry Commission is the main sponsor of the MS PLT program.  PLT is an Environmental Education Program that trains teachers to bring the environment into the classroom.  For more information on PLT, visit the following:

Natural Resource Summer Camp

The Mississippi Forestry Commission and the Mississippi State University College of Forest Resources partner to provide high school students the opportunity to learn about careers in natural resources.  This week long camp is held on the campus of MSU in June of each year.  Students learn from and get one on one instruction from many natural resources professionals. Students learn about forestry, urban forestry, GIS & GPS, fire management, wildlife & fisheries management, forest products and more.  There are classroom activities, field trips, lab exercises, hands on activities, and more.

Conservation Education

The Mississippi Forestry Commission is actively involved and has many partners to bring environmental education to students and adult audiences.  Classroom visits and landowner field day are a regular part of our outreach activities.

Arbor Day and Earth Day

The Mississippi Forestry Commission plays an active role in Mississippi's Arbor Day each February (second Friday in February) with events from the State Capitol to the classroom.  Tree planting ceremonies occur statewide.  Earth Day events also occur statewide on April  22nd with tree give away programs and tree planting ceremonies.
